You are right about the masters. When Anka left ABC for RCA in 1962, he negotiated a deal to buy both his masters and his publishing from ABC. In all, he paid $265,000 - which in 1962 was a very very large sum indeed. Then something weird happened. He went and re-recorded all of his ABC hits for RCA! At the time, I remember it being said that he re-recorded them because he could do them better (and to be honest, with one or two exceptions, the RCA versions are very good indeed). On the other hand, recently, I read somewhere that he regretted the remakes. Nobody really seems to know exactly, if why - having bought the originals - he then remade them, but I think that the answer probably lies in the terms under which he purchased the masters in the first place. A lot of master-purchase deals stipulate a period during which the original label has the sole right to sell off all existing stocks without having to face a rival compilation, so perhaps RCA were pushing to have a Greatest Hits LP there and then and insisted on the remakes. Certainly, there was ABC Anka material available in the USA on vinyl throughout the 60's and up until ABC was sold to MCA in the seventies, and even later (perhaps because of extended overseas deals), ABC material was available in Europe well into the 1980's. |
