Well I'm old enough to remember a time when label execs were guys who went to concerts, bought records, and turned up at recording sessions. I'm also old enough to remember when publishing execs had a piano in their offices - and knew how to play it. Nowadays, labels are run by Economics students from Harvard, while publishing companies are run by lawyers from Yale. And neither know anything, or care anything, about music. They would ne just as happy (and do less damage) running factories that produced widgets. (Whatever widgets are). The real problem was - the music industry became too profitable in the mid sixties, so that it attracted every sort of shark imaginable. If rock and roll had remained a minority sport, there would still be the occasional musician running a music business. Am I bitter? Am I heck! |
