The Coasters did not do as much over here as they did in the USA - "Little Egypt" for example did not chart and they had just three Top 20 hits. Believe it or not, and you will ket a kick out of this - right now I am listening to Irish radio, and they have just played an ad for a concert featuring (and I quote) "The Original 4 Tops" and "The Anerican Drifters"! Gold only knows who is in these lineups! Missed the start of the ad but think they are appearing in Killarney which is about 60 miles away, so I might drop down to see whoever it is now constitutes The Drifters and The 4 Tops! Incidentally, the reason they are called "The American Drifters" in Ireland, is because over here, a showband called Joe Dolan & The Drifters were huge during the 50's, 60's, 70's and 80's, so the American Drifters is the name they went under when touring Ireland. Actually, Cliff Richard & The Shadows, started as Cliff Richard & The Drifters, but that lasted for less than a year. The Irish guys (being stubborn), stuck with the name! |
