Subject: George Michael Dies At 70

Message Detail:
He was THE nighttime 'King of the DJ's' at WFIL in Philadelphia and WABC in New York throughout the 70's before moving into a career in sports in Washington DC where he stayed until his departure one year ago.

My personal memory of George Michael goes back to the summer of 1977.

I was working at my first radio job in Seaford, Delaware as the all-night jock.

I left my mobile home in Bridgeville on a sultry night and headed to work down US 13 north. I tuned in WABC on the car radio of my 1972 cherry red Ford Pinto and George Michael was recapping the fact that Musicradio 77 had just came back on the air after the power went out.

It was the big blackout of 1977.

He had just introed the Peter McCann song 'Do You Wanna Make Love' on WABC when the power was cut.

The station in a few minutes went to a generator and got back on the air. Michael came on and played the rest of the song. He outroed it with some cute and clever lines about finally finishing out the song.

He then proceeded to give a commentary about what was going on around Manhattan and instantly switched into a 'news mode' to inform his listeners.

He was an inspiration to hundreds of jocks and entertained millions of listeners on radio and TV.

George Michael - An American broadcast icon.
