Subject: Count Basie - April In Paris

Message Detail:

The days of the Big Bands, amen. The dynamics of the sound can't be matched by Rock & Roll. No need for amplifiers to fill a large ballroom with sound! Anyway, this is one of my favorites, I believe from the mid '50's (feel free to correct). The nice thing I read was the admiration between my idol, Buddy Rich (drummer), and The Count. It appears The Count wrote Buddy a blank check for his participation in Count's band, but Buddy just tore it up! Two great guys! I was surprised to find this LP album in many different forms on CD; even a Japanese pressing! Must have been a decent quality recording for its time; even though it's monophonic. Has been remade in stereo, but not the same. Why I liked the '60's+; horns were still included in Pop songs. But keyboards would later emulate the horn sound. While I did get to see Buddy Rich's Big Band perform, along with Maynard Ferguson's, I wish I saw more....

Best,
John
p.s. You can loop this snippet and the ending never ends :-)
p.p.s. The (partial) image scan is from a Promenade Records LP - Fred Burton plays Honky Tonk. Date of publication is unknown (mid '50's possibly), but manufactured in Newark, NJ, by Synthetic Plastics Co.
