John said.... For example, he lists the 500 Most Successful Acts (Elvis is at Number 1)....I'm sure Berry Gordy with disagree with the death of MJ! Jim replied.... I doubt it - Joel is had always has been, a dedicated Elvis fan, so there! Actually, now that I think of it, the method used to work out these rankings, has been subject to some argument, with a few (obviously wrong-minded) people apparently suggesting that the points system utilised by Joel, was designed to make sure that Elvis out-performed the Beatles (who came second). However, given that Elvis had 9486 points and the Beatles a mere 5177, it is difficult to see how any system could be fixed to get such an outcome. And to be fair, Joel actually published his points system, as follows: #1 = 100 points for the first week + 10 points for each additional week at #1. #2 = 90 points + 5 #3 = 80 + 80 + 3 and so on, down to #100 = 10 points. Then having worked out all that, the total number of weeks on the chart were added. Now it could be argued that given the length of Elvis's career vis-a-vis the Beatles, the system was weighted in favour of Elvis, but as I say, it would be difficult to see how any other system would have worked out all that much different anyway. But to end on a completely different note...I see the new certifications from the RIAA (Recording Industry Association of America) have just been released and they show that Elvis has sold most, followed by the Beatles, followed by ? Well I thought it might be Michael Jackson...or Billy Joel...or Elton John...or The Rolling Stones...or Madonna....or even (a wild card here), Garth Brooks. None of these. In third place, comes George Strait. Now that's one for the books! |
