Hi Linda, Here are a few thoughts. 'Old Gold' is a term used to describe hits from 1955-63 (pre-Beatles). Try 4 hours. 8 to midnight is best. All the dancers in their wheelchairs and walkers have to leave by midnight to allow time to slowly shuffle home and get in the door before the crack of dawn. You MUST play some Motown. If you don't, I guarantee you they'll pester the DJ until he plays it. Stick with the tried and true stuff. Good decision to leave out the 80's. Too much of a clash with the traditional Top 40 oldies. Be careful with disco from the 70's. Probably no more than one an hour, or two back to back if the crowd is into it. Figure out your bottom line cost, add 20% for unexpected expenses on top of that, and then set your price. If you have beverages, chips and pretzels only, $15 is fine. If you're serving food, $25 is a good bottom line. Also, figure out how many people max you can put in the hall, but don't overcrowd. Leave room for a decent size dance floor. Rather than spending a lot of money on outside promotion, get friends and dance clubs to promote the event, and maybe sell a table or two for you. Or like Jimmy Dee said, try to tie in with a local oldies station and give them a few tickets for giveaway in exchange for on-air mentions. Can't miss dance songs from the 50's & early 60's? Come Go With Me Generally, medium beat jitterbugs, cha-chas, swing, a really fast jitterbug every now and then, and on rare occasions...a waltz. Hope this helps. Bob |
