I think we've drifted away from Linda's original query, which essentially is 'How do you either make money or at least avoid losing money when holding a dance?'

The event I referred to in an earlier post grossed upwards of $50,000.00. Tickets were $40 each. The music was exclusively 50's and 60's.

To what extent older folks can dance to music that is 50 years old or whether people in their late 30's can still cut the rug to Prince or Billy Idol is not the issue. Some people ARE in wheelchairs or walkers, but if they want to pay money to sit and listen to the songs of their youth and enjoy the memories...then everybody wins, right?

I've DJ'ed hundreds of events over the years and here is the bottom line: If it's danceable, people are happy. In other words, if I were to spin records (so to speak) at an 80's dance, and after they're up on the floor...work in a little KC & The Sunshine Band, Wilson Pickett, and even Jailhouse Rock...they'll dance to it.

Two of the more identifiable songs for people in their teens and 20's (let alone 30's) are 'Shout' and 'Do You Love Me', release dates 1959 and 1962 respectively.

Two girls in their mid-20's came up to me a while back at a function and wanted Sinatra.

So again I say...if you do 50's and 60's exclusively, it will work.

50's thru the 80's? That can work too, but be very careful. You must have a DJ who will be familiar with and conscientiously weave the eras, styles, and TEMPOS one after the other.

Be very careful how you promote it too. 'Call it a 'Dance Hits Hall Of Fame', or 'Best Of The 50's Thru The 80's.

Seems to me that the onslaught of rap and hip hop and the dearth of positive lyrics in much of today's music has caused many younger folks to seek out the golden oldies of their forefathers.

Ya just need to keep them dancing!
