I have a question for you, sir. As the official UOM Master of Alternate Versions, you may be able to answer something that's been buggin' me for a long time. One of those I-know-what-I-heard-but-nobody-believes-me predicaments. You, of course, would remember one of the few bubblegum tunes I have always liked--"Quick Joey Small" by Kasenetz-Katz etc., with its cartoonish outlaw edginess. One of my faves from the autumn of 1968. I've heard the 45 rpm single on Youtube but it sounds like there's something missing. I could swear that in the original that Top 40 stations played 40 years ago, the middle part that starts out "Sheriff got a shotgun" occurred twice, and the second time Joey L. sings the line "He'll hit your head with one whack" the melody begins a fifth higher and ends an octave higher than the first time. Maybe it was the promo copy I remember being aired. I'm not sure. Do you have anything to confirm what I'm talking about? And if so, I'd love to hear it--for the first time in 40 years. Best, Jeff |
