Hi Jim & John sorry to intrude on your private forum but I thought you might like to know more about the Shadows success here in the UK.
There first solo chart record(lots of previous success backing Cliff Richard)was the original of Apache which reached no.1 in 1960,they charted 32 times here including 16 top tens & 5 no.1's.Although their peak was before the Beatles they still had hits here up to 1981,including 2 top 10's in 1978/9 & a number 12 in 1980.
As for the Ventures they reached no.8 with "Walk Don't Run" & no.4 with "Perfidia" & only had 2 minor chart records after that.
You were also talking about "The Kinks" earlier & I noticed that in this weeks chart show Bob played Hermans Hermits "Dandy" which was written by Ray Davies & originally recorded by the Kinks. For what it's worth I think they were probably the most talented of "The British Invasion"(Beatles & Stones aside)although their style was probably too british for the US market, songs such as "Waterloo Sunset""Deadend Street""Autumn Almanac""Days""Lola" were far more relevent to England & particularly London. As you correctly stated Ray Davies is still recording & performing fairly regularly over here
Alan
