Well election day has come, and gone, so it is time to wrap up my first and probably last - (well until Election Day 2009 anyway) quiz! (1) Name a US Vice-President who had a US Top 30 song during the rock and roll years (1955-1969). Answer, as Alan Rich correctly pointed out, was US Vice President Charles Dawes, who wrote a tune back in 1912 called "Melody in A Major,", which went on to have words added to it by Carl Sigman about forty years later, who then re-named it "It's All In The Game", and thus gave Tommy Edwards, amongst others, the opportunity of having a hit with a song written (in part anyway), by a Vice President. So does Joe Biden write songs I wonder? (2) Name a US Governor who had a US Top 30 song during the rock and roll years (1955-1969). Answer, as Bob Mathers correctly stated, was Governor Jimmie Davis of Louisiana, who claimed to have written the song "You Are My Sunshine", recorded by (amongst others, Ray Charles). Or at least that is what the record books say. Except that we now know that the song was actually written by Paul Rice, who sold it to Jimmie Davis, who put his name to it. But those things happen, and Senator Jimmie is credited with the song. (3) Name a US Senator who had a US Top 30 song during the rock and roll years (1955-1969). (And no, I'm not talking about "Senator Bobby"!) The final question, was I thought the easiest one, but no takers. (Everybody Stateside is obviously too busy watching the results). The answer was Senator Everett Dirksen of Illinois, whose own recording of "Gallant Men" on Capitol, reached Number 29 on the Billboard singles charts, in December 1066. It was his only hit - the senator passing away some three years later.
