You know life is weird. He took thaty one flight so that he could get the band's laundry done. Nowadays, a travelling laundry probably accompanies a tour - in those days, they didn't even have a roadie - just a bus driver/tour organiser. They did everything themselves - including collecting the money, setting up the sound system, playing two shows, getting something to eat, climbing onto the bus, driving for six or seven hours overnight, finding a hotel to sleep a few hours during the day, and then doing it all over again. One day off every week so that they could do laundry, do radio station interviews, and bank the money. And usually for $200 per night - before expenses. And we complain! It looked great from the outside - up until 1968 or so, it was anything but. No wonder bands split up so quickly - I am amazed no rock and roll star was ever charged with murder. |
