Subject: RE: Royalties |
|
Re the MCPS query.... The MCPS, or Mechanical Copyright Protection Society, is a British soeciety which represents songwriter and music publishers. Acting on behalf of its members, MCPS negotiates agreements with those who issue recordings of thst music. It then collects and distributes these "mechanical" royalties to its members. You might like to look at their website The MCPS is the UK equivalent of the US Harry Fox Agency. The PRS is the UK equivalent of the US ASCAP, BMI or SESAC agencies. Most countries have their own equivalents, although the MCPS does represent a lot of these rights in the EC. Regarding your remark that foreign countries do not pay royalties to US acts - all I can say is - wish it were true! In fact 70% of US acts earn more money from their overseas royalties than they do from their domestic royalties. In addition, royalty rates in many countries are also higher than they are in the USA. What is different is the term of copyright for recordings, which in the US is almost double that of the UK. That is why an unusual anomaly has arisen in that if the term remains unchanged, then the Beatles recordings will be out of copyright in the UK in 2012, but will be copyright in the US until 2052!
