The 1962 stereo version is from the original 1957 Dot session. In 1957, at the height of his movie career for Warner, Hunter signed a recording deal with Dot, which was in fact prohibited by his Warner contract, which barred any contracts signed without the consent of Warners. He recorded two chart singles for Dot "99 Ways" (which flopped initially but was a hit after "Young Love") and "Young Love", and one LP which was provisionally titled "Young Love", and which was shipped to wholesalers (in mono) but never put on sale, although I believe copies still exist. However, before Dot could release the LP, Jack Warner injuncted the label, and prevented its release for five years. It was finally released in 1962 - this time in stereo. It was said at the time that Jack Warner only got annoyed over Dot when he held a press conference to announce a new Tab Hunter movie, to find most of the reporters only wanted to talk about "Young Love". In March 1958, Jack Warner set up a new label, Warner Brothers Records, spefically to record Hunter, and any other Warner Movies stars who wished to record. Hunter did a few singles for them, and faded away. |
