Subject: A note about Gary Lewis' 8/24/68 entry

Message Detail:
You may have noticed this is a quite different-sounding Gary featured in this countdown. On all his previous hits, producer Snuff Garrett mixed Gary's vocals, overdubbing them with other voices and added reverb. There was a reason for that: By himself, Gary was never a particularly good singer, and you can tell in his "Sealed With a Kiss" remake. It was his only charted hit where his voice is noticeably thin, dry, and frequently off-key in the higher notes. That's because it is pure Gary, undiluted. It must've taken some courage for him to insist on doing it that way; fortunately the tearful strings complement his natural voice well and together give the record a more sincere feel--not as polished as Brian Hyland's immortal original, though.
