It's not often that you can catch the oldies authority making a mistake, but the current July 10, 1965 survey has one. Jay Traynor was not the lead singer on Cara Mia. That was Jay Black. Traynor only sang with the group for maybe one year, and the only hit he sang on was "She Cried". He then left and was replaced by David Black, who would change his name because after all, you can't have a David singing lead in "Jay and the Americans" :-) Several years ago Black won a lawsuit that allowed him to keep and perform under the name Jay Black. Jay had sold the rights to the groups name to one of the original members in order to pay his IRS debt. The original Americans, with the legal name now, then reformed the group with a new lead singer, and tried to keep Jay Black from performing the songs he had made hits under that name. Thankfully he won the right to make a living by singing the songs that made the group famous. What would the Americans have done without that great voice of Jay Black? As a side note, Jay Black at one time had two guys in his band that later went on to become Steely Dan, namely Donald Fagen and Walter Becker Supposedly Jay Traynor made some noise about this also, but this guy bailed out after one hit record. |
