Alan, Yes there is controversy over this one. One source says...The Chiffons were not three LA, but New York City schoolkids who were hired to cover the song by Ronnie Mack out of Philadelphia. Mack got wind of the song from Shirley Owens who wrote 'Tonight's The Night' with Luther Dixon and had the Chiffons record the tune on Big Deal Records....and were one and the same group that had 'He's So Fine' and other tunes. Another source says the 1960 Chiffons were not connected with the hitmakers of the same name from '63-'64. Two of the original members...Judy Craig (lead singer) and Patricia Bennett, told an interviewer they were not connected with the California group...but does that necessarily mean the girls did not record the song? A little more food for thought. One clue may be to listen to the song. If similarities pop up between 'TTN' and later efforts, assuming Craig is the lead on both, that would help solve the mystery.
