Jimmy, Can't wait for your "banned songs" special. In case you did not know, the Governor of Indiana, where I have lived my entire life, banned the Kingsman's 'Louie, Louie' from being played on the radio shorty after it was released. Of course, no one really knew the words, but if it sounded dirty, it must have been dirty. I saw Lou Christie in concert a few years ago at an oldies show, and he said that his song's Rhaposody In The Rain's lyrics had to be changed from "making love in the rain" to "making out in the rain" in order to get airplay. Mitch Ryder said similar in concert about his song "Sock It To Me". He mentioned that this song was shooting up the charts, but suddenly shot back down, because radio stations stopped playing it because of supposed suggestive lyrics. Now these songs were out in 1966-1967. We are talking about "Summer Of Love" timeframe here. So even as the sexual revolution and free love became a part of the culture, AM radio was still pretty much on the conservative side. Funny, but soon after, in 1968, a very popular television show and soon to be female superstar actress would make the phrase "Sock It To Me" one of the most popular phrases of that time. Even a U.S. President appeared on the show saying this phrase! Pretty easy three part trivia. Any takers?
