John, Johnny Angel was sung by teen actress Shelly Fabares. At that time, in 1962, she was a teenager on the Donna Reed show, playing the role of Mary Stone. From all that I have heard, she was more or less forced to sing this song, thinking that her voice was not good enough. At that time, most tv teen idols put out hit records. Her tv brother on the show, Paul Peterson, had several hits of his own. But she did it, and it was a #1 hit in 1962. Shelly was one of the few child actors that was able to keep her career going into adulthood. She was on the big hit show Coach in the late 1980's into the early 1990's. She had to undergo a liver transplant several years ago, but today is in fine health. She was one of those that I had a big crush on "back in the day"!
