I do not know anybody alive now who would know for sure, but I have played your snippet alongside my original Federal release, and it is identical, so I guess you have the original Federal recording.

You are right - it did not sound at all bad for 1954 - it had a nice crossover feel to it.

Buck Ram said that when he took the Platters to Mercury, the execs there wanted to release the Platters on their so-called "race label", which usually only got airplay on stations catering for black audiences, but he refused, saying they deserved to be heard by everybody.

So Mercury relented and put them out on their main label, and the rest as they say, is history.
