John wrote... Maybe this song was featured in a Soul show here. Jim replies.... "Lipstick Traces" is still available on an album called "Working On Your Case", and was recorded in 1965, reaching Number 48. It was their second hit. I had never really listened to it much before, as I really love the original by Benny Spellman which only made 80 in 1962, but now that I hear the O'Jays version, it really is excellent. John also wrote.... I didn't even know The O'Jays existed before the early '70's! *blush* :-) Jim replies.... I think they go back to 1957 or 1958, under a variety of names. The O'Jays name came about in 1963, when changed from The Mascots to the O'Jays - naming themselves after the DJ Eddie O'Jay. Their first album came out that year and their first single hit "Lonely Drifter". I have a feeling that there was another band or solo act who also named themselves after a DJ but I cannot place them right now. Remembering this sort of thing is about the only advantage of being older! |
