Speaking of Buddy Holly, it appears his songs scored better in the UK than the US.

Oh he was huge over here. In one week in 1958, he had four out of the Top 20 singles!

Even long after he died in Fenruary 1959, he was still scoring UK hits.

(1) It Doesn't Matter Anymore (No 1 1959)
(2) Midnight Shift (No 26 1959)
(3) Peggy Sue Got Married (No 13 1959)
(4) Heartbeat (reissue)(No 30 1960)
(5) True Love Ways (No 25 1960)
(6) Learning The Game (No 36 1960)
(7) What To Do (No 34 1961)
(8) Baby I Don't Care (No 12 1961)
(9) Listen To Me (reissue)(No 48 1961)
(10) Reminiscing (No 17 1962)
(11) Brown Eyed Handsom Man (No 3 1963)
(12) Bo Diddley (No 4 1963)
(13) Wishing (No 10 1963)
(14) What To Do (No 27 1963)
(15) You've Got Love (No 27 1964)
(16) Love's Made A Fool Of You (No 39 1964)
(17) Peggy Sue (reissue) (No 32 1968)

His last hit on the singles charts was a re-issue of "True Love Ways" in 1988!

Of course, his albums charted into this century, and I understand that next year (2009 - his 50th Anniversary), Coral/Decca are planning a masive blitz over here, which means he will most likely be back at Number 1 again!

Incidentally, who are also big over here are The Crickets. Even after Buddy Holly's death, the continued to have Top 20 hits - including "When You Ask About Love", "More Than I Can Say", "Baby My Heart", "Don't Ever Change", "My Little Girl", "Don't Try To Change Me", "They Call Her La Bamba" etc.

Even nowadays, they still tour the UK regularly.

And did you know there were no females in the studio orchestra? Really, the "quiet boys!" well put an end to that mystery! :-)

Not sure if I understand the above!

Holly did use an orchestra (the Dick Jacobs Orchestra) in 1958 on eight tracks, but there were females present on two of the tracks anyway - namely "Early In The Morning" and "Now We're One" as you can see from the session photographs.

(I have a feeling I did not quite understand the point you were making!)
