"Moritat (A Theme from The Three Penny Opera)", a 1956 hit which was remade three years later by Bobby Darin and retitled "Mack the Knife." The song under its original title is truly a forgotten classic, perhaps more than any other famous hit of that era. There were six--count 'em, six--Top 40 versions of "Moritat"--five of them in 1956 and one in 1960. Four of them were instrumentals. Louis Armstrong, Lawrence Welk, Richard Hayman (featuring Jan August), and the Dick Hyman Trio had the highest charted versions. Only Dick Hyman's rendition cracked the Top 10, and Richard Hayman's peaked at #11. Try not to confuse the last two. The only one of the six versions I ever remember hearing is Satchmo's. Quite a few folks have. But I have absolutely no clue as to which of the others would appeal the most to today's audience, but it would be a darn good idea to feature at least one of them on UOR. When was the last time a radio station played THAT??? By the way, "Moritat" goes back MUCH further than the early rock era, but I don't want to steal too much of Bob's thunder. J |
