I am wholly convinced that many men in this world are missing a significant part of their heart...to that one girl who symbolizes all of the ex-girlfriends who stay forever enshrined in the wistful mists of our minds. Songs have a way of serving as emotional 'rear-view mirrors'. A tune, or part of a tune...can trigger a thought of one girl or another from long ago...and we wonder where she is, what she is doing...and sometimes...ask ourselves why she isn't doing it with me? And in many cases it has nothing to do with infidelity or lust. It's just for the moment there is that 'lost in the thought' rewind of a sound, a scene, even a smell that can trigger some pretty deep angst. The main reason I took 'Auld Lang Syne' out of the chronological order and saved it for last in the show was along the lines of what Jeff alluded to. As the mournful sax played following Dan's last lyric...perhaps the listener realized the storyline is symbolic of Fogelberg's passing. Knowing the long trail at the end, it seemed appropriate to reflect over it by sharing the words on his website announcing his departure. Like the old girlfriend in the song...Dan Fogelberg too...has gone. And just like that occasional desire to reach back for something that's no longer there...his passing is also...a very poignant thing.
