I first heard the "add-on" version of 'Smile A Little Smile' on CD...when I played it as a DJ in 1989 on WARM 103 FM in York, Pennsyvlania. The song was on the 'Golddisc' series. The radio release back in '69 NEVER played that opening riff. You bring up an oddity that has become more prevalent in the last couple of decades. That is...record companies and radio programmers who for some reason begin marketing and/or playing a version of a song that in some way, shape or form is different from the way it was heard in its 'heyday'. Along those same lines... Radio stations today play Loggins & Messina's version of 'Danny's Song'. Their recording was NOT the hit in '73. Anne Murray had the hit...but many US stations NEVER play Anne's version. For the 'record' (pardon the pun)...Anne's release hit #7. L&M's never charted. Gotta be a story behind that somewhere. Bob |
