The funny thing about these countdowns is the emotion I experience when each song is played on the way to number one. Every tune builds on another one and as I can best recall my feelings in the summer of '71, they were generally a perception of malaise. Folks back then were either very tired of bad news or very edgy about having to confront more of it. As I stated in the program notes, many songs had a message. When you think of tunes heard in this countdown like 'Watching The River Flow' and 'You've Got A Friend ' (when you're down, and troubled, and you need a helping hand)...people were worn to a frazzle and just wanted to take some time to come away from it all. Pop music has always reflected the culture of the moment. If you're too young to remember a particular week in Top 40 history, simply listen to the words of the songs. It'll give you a bit of a glimpse into the way it really was at the time. Thanks, Bob Mathers |
