Just being silly. I gather, the dollar amount artists were paid was small, but royalties (or writers (thanks, Bob)) helped to pacify. But if a large amount was paid, up front, w/o royalties, then "royalties" probably would have never existed.

Music, I feel, was pocket change to record companies, compared to movie and film. For those artists, such as Elvis, whose songs were featured in movies, the sound quality was superior to what was typically issued. Broadway "hits" blow my mind, with sound quality. Audio + Video needed to be its best.
