Jimmy Dee wrote: He was probably the greatest drummer ever I've listened to drum battles, Krupa vs Rich and others up against Buddy. Granted, Gene was a great drummer, but he typically had a loose snare drum, just like Cozy Cole. It reverberated the sound. Buddy, however, always has a tight snare, to let you hear how fast and precise he was. Jimmy, to me, Buddy's drum solos were like a song itself. I got to see him once at Brandy's Warf, in Philly; a small joint, as a young teen, but the sound of a Big Band, live, will never be forgotten by me. He was my idol, Jimmy. Glad you got to meet Gene!!!! I like the fast paced Big Band sound. I guess Big Bands were popular because they could fill a large ballroom with sound, without amplifiers. Thanks, Jimmy! Best, |
