The Summer of Love marked the beginning of the great fragmentation of rock music into (initially) two camps--one basically Top 40/teen/preteen, the other album/progressive/adult rock. A lot of us mid-Boomers like me were caught in the middle--too old for bubblegum but too young for Hendrix. But R&B/soul at that time was still presenting a firmly united, innovative, and glorious front. I can't think of any other reason why this month in 1967 featured more truly enduring R&B favorites of mine than perhaps any other period in the classic Top 40 era. Soul Finger, More Love, Cold Sweat, I Wanna Testify, You're My Everything, Hypnotized, Reflections, Up-Up And Away, and Little Bit O' Soul (I guess you could call the latter soul in name only) were all at or near the top of my personal faves list at one time or another during that summer. And there are two other records below the survey like the ones above--I think I'll add 'em to my next Oh Wows. Also, I'm not exactly a fan of Dean Martin, but I do like "Chapel." It took his inebriated slurring to a new level (Inda chabbel in-a moolight / Azzay sing-o promuzzmee). Seriously though, according to the recent PBS documentary Dino's sozzled persona was fake; he never got drunk while performing, and when you saw him on TV with a drink in his hand, most of the time it was apple juice.
