Jim, The usual formula for determining cutoff popularity for a 25-54 demo in American radio programming is rather simple. The 'consultants' say that the average person recalls the songs that were popular when he or she was 16 years old. Therefore, someone today who is 54 was 16 in 1969. That's why oldies stations have moved their core artists into the 70's and early 80's. Some chestnuts like can't-miss British Invasion and Motown singles prior to '69 stay around, but for the most part...it's Elton, Springsteen, and the Eagles all the way. Concurrently, the term 'oldies' has been replaced by US outlets with the moniker 'Greatest Hits Of All Time'. Hope that helps...and thanks for sharing YOUR very valid views on the subject. Bob |
