Back when the UK pirate ships were riding the waves, our class nerd assured us that if we wanted pick them up in Limerick (Ireland), we should drive down to the River Shannon, and tune in on AM to BigL Radio London, by trailing as far as the water's edge, an extension attached to the car antenna. Reception naturally increased 100% - (we had of course no clue why in those days) - but our scientific genius assured us that since since BigL was broadcasting from a ship, we were obviously picking up "underwater transmission" (a mysterious force far too complex to be explained to us!). Come to think of it, he also warned us that if we accidentally dipped the extension into the water, our car radio would be totalled. And possibly us with it. Daft as it seems now, we were happy to believe him on any count, as long as we could hear something other than the State Radio playing Doris Day all night long. Happy days! PS Love the "Before They Were Stars"! |
