Subject: RE: Last Original Drifter Dies

Message Detail:
I was sad to see Bill's note about Bill Pinkney's death. He was an amazing man, apart altogether from that most beautiful bass voice.

At one stage, he played professional baseball (I think in New York), while during World War 2, he won a number of military decorations including a Presidential Citation.

He also started the campaign for recognition of those oldies groups who featured original members, and he was involved in both the Friends Against Musical Exploitation Organisation and the Truth in Rock Association.

Even in his late seventies, he sat down and penned an autobiograhpy titled "Drifters 1 : Bill Pinkney" which is one of the best books on rock and roll I have ever read, and which may still be available online.

Over the years, I have been able to attend gigs by a number of different Drifters, include Johnny Moore's version, but unfortunately, I was never lucky enough to see Bill's lineup, which was apparently, the most authentic of them all.
