Ed, The salary was actually $2.30 an hour, which meant that my 11 hours of weekend work when I broke in paid me a gross wage of $25.30. If I hitch hiked round trip from Baltimore to Seaford, I made money. If I bought a round trip ticket on Greyhound (didn't have a car at the time), I broke even. Now...if you had hired me at WITH in July of 1976 when I came into the station and applied, I could have taken the number 3 bus from Brunswick Street and Wilkens Avenue down to 7 East Lexington, made money, and started with a higher hourly wage...like maybe $2.40 an hour. Regarding your comments on the O'Brien aircheck...it is evident when listening to the personalities of the 50's and 60's that you had to be good to get on the air...and STAY on the air. Unlike today, nobody listened to FM and AM was the only outlet for personality radio. What I find interesting about O'Brien is that he was on WMCA 20 years BEFORE rock and roll began...and made a very successful transition to the medium! Thanks, Bob |
