Speaking of royalties, record companies, and broadcasters. I will have to say that over the years broadcasters have paid for more music than record sales alone would have ever generated. And record companies, well, I'm still waiting to get paid for Henrietta, a tune than turns 50 this October. Gosh, has it been that long already. Time flies when you're having fun. I have always felt that royalties should go direct to the artist... not the record company, because their record of payment, especially during the late fifties and all through the 1960s is almost criminal. So many artists were cheated out of royalties including some of the big name hit makers. An artist does it for the music, believe me, because in the long run, it is a life of depravation and pain, and hardship. A musician is almost forced by some inner yearning to perform, to bring something within them to life and to share it with others... that's what makes music special. It is truly an emotional experience. That's why we remember music so well, because some songs are uniquely tied to an emotion we once felt. There are some songs that I stopped singing years ago because I would be overwhelmed by emotion when I sang, and, of course, my voice would break, and I would end up just saying the lyrics while tears fell from my eyes. So to all those that perform and to all those that have enjoyed the performances, I say that it was with love that I came this way, and it will be with love when I leave. A love of people and the music that makes them smile. So, that being said... it's on with the show. |
