My ggfather was Samuel Frost Tasker of the 1st Me Hvy Arty who was wounded in the charge from the Prince George Courthouse Rd. He was b. 20 Mar 1846 in Dixmont, Me. He m. 9 Jun 1866, Augusta Anne Glass, and had Mabel, Myrtle, and Edward. He d. 18 Dec 1915 and is bur. in Pine Grove Cemetery in Bangor. Mabel m. Frederick Arthur Colby and had Harold, Gladys, and Mabelle (my mother). His grandson Harold, who was abt. 20 when Sam died said the wound was from a mini ball the shoulder which passed thru without doing serious damage. He said Sam was carrying the colors which were picked up by someone after he fell. Sam packed mud in the wound and spent most of the night on the field, crawling back to the road in early morning. He was patched up and put on light duty assisting at the aid station.

Ken, my direct reply to you got returned so I am posting it here. I checked the online records of the graves in Petersburg. They did not list Asa Dore or Moses Stewart. Asa Dore was KIA on 6/18 1864 and more than likley was buried where he fell on the field. In 1867 when most of the graves around Petersburgh were dug up and moved to Poplar Grove many of them were unidentifeid. Have you seen the letters of Asa Dore? These are great letters. They were transcribed by a Chistopher A Dore who I assume is a decendant.

Hello all! I have just recently learned of my heritage in the Civil War. All of my great-great-grandfathers fought and 3 survived. My grandmother is conducting a family history, and searching desperately for information regarding Charles O. Smith of Company D, 2nd Battery, 1st Maine Light Artillary. She has some information that he fought at Gettysburg, perhaps captured a Confederate artillary nest, and had a monument at the battlefield. If anyone has any information about him, I (and my grandmother) would greatly appreciate you contacting me. Thank you!

Great Site As others I have been refered here by Wayne Bean. I am a great great niece to Lemuel B. Whitney, Killed in action,at Spotsylvania Court House, May 19, 1864. Lemuel was in Co. B of the 1st. He was 42, when he enlisted, out of Bangor, Maine, married with children. Unfortunately, that is all I have, still trying to piece things together. Would take any input-- Thank you. Sally

I am the great-great-granddaughter of COL. CHARLES A. CLARK, a medal of honor awardee who served in the 6th Maine. I believe that his three brothers, WHITING STEVENS CLARK, JAMES WILLIAM CLARK, and FRANKLIN ATHERTON CLARK all served in the First Maine Heavy Artillery (at least they're listed on the website here!). Frank died in July, 1864 of wounds suffered at Petersburg; the 3 other brothers survived wounds that they received during the war (I believe that all were wounded in battle; I know that Charles and James were). The Clark family was from Sangerville, ME. I am in the process of compiling family history and am interested in tracking down any info I can about the Clark family. Thanks! Andrea Solarz

I am interested in obtaining any information regarding my cousin, Doane Blood Colcord who served in the 1st Regiment, Maine Heavy Artillery. I would be especially interested in a picture of him and/or his comrades. Doane was born in Bucksport, Maine, on November 14, 1841. From his mustering-in date to December, 1863, he was a Musician in Co. "G," 1st Regiment,Maine Heavy Artillery. During November and December, 1863, he underwent examination and evaluation for service in the U.S. Army Signal Corp. On December 24, 1863 at Fort Sumner, he was transferred to the U.S. Army Signal Corps by General Order #388 from the War Department. He remained with that service until being mustered out in 1865. Doane had a brother, William David Colcord, who was a Private in Company "A," 1st California Battalion of Mountaineers and a sister, Emily, who was a nurse during the Civil War. I am currently writing a book ("Freedom's Warriors")on the exploits of my Colcord ancestors in the Civil War. Any information which one might provide would be very helpful in the completion of my task. I also had 2 Colcord relatives in the 1st Maine Vol. Cavalry Regiment and one each in the 3rd, 4th, 6th, 9th, 26th and 29th Maine Volunteer Infantry Regiments. I am a Civil War enthusiast, and my wife and I have travelled many campaign trails in the South. In the process of my research and travel over the years,I have accumulated a variety of informational bits and pieces which I would be more than happy to share. Congratulations on a marvelous web site!

THE "SECOND" MAINE HEAVY ARTILLERY It has come to my attention that this website, being one of a kind, is getting swamped with understandably serious inquiries about ancestors who were NOT in the 1st Me. Heavies. I am one of the first and biggest supporters of this site and wish to take some load off the site manager. I am in a strong position to answer questions about the 11th Maine Infantry Regiment. I refer to them as the "SECOND HEAVY ARTILLERY" as they trained as heavy artillery after they had become a veteran infantry outfit. They were recruited in roughly the same areas as the 1st H.A. so inquiries are likely. I have a complete roster, hometowns, casualty information and known addresses as of 1895. Please feel free to contact me directly, allowing Mr. Woodcock to concentrate on the subject matter of this wonderful site. Believe me, it will be an award winner! Wayne R. Bean

My gGrandfather was James Langley of 1st Regiment Hvy Artly Company B Maine Volunteers. He had two older brothers Charles and Thomas Langley in the same unit. He enlisted in Bangor, Maine on November 16,1863 and was discharged on September 11, 1865 at Fort Baker, D.C. One of his brothers was killed by a mini-ball and the other was wounded and received disability. James was 14 or barely 15 when he enlisted. James later moved to Sumpter, Minnesota, where he homesteaded and died at age 26 from after effects of illnesses received while in the civil war. Sumpter is very close to Glencoe, Minn. I possess his original discharge papers.

As I indicated previously, my G-grandfather, Benjamin S. Campbell was wounded during the May 19, 1864 action. His cousin, William B. Campbell was wounded same day, lost his right leg. I believe William was Clerk of Courts in Ellsworth sometime later. Did he have a family? I have a little Campbell information to share.

Hi Cuz, Glad to be here. Been looking forward to it. Time for the Calais Advertiser Article! Will contact them tomorrow if "sender" is working. Ordered your forage cap this morning. Found an outfit in " Ole Miss " that made the closest match. I ordered the brass through a friend of mine. I'm excited about this. This is my first official " authentic uniform research " project. Now this is a forage cap - the " high crown " service cap. I think that it is a great fishing accessory - it will hold hundreds of flies to begin with. It is also very deep the round crown was designed to fall forward so that the brass Unit I.D. could be seen from the front. If you get hungry on a fishing trip and have to " forage " at a nearby farm, it will hold a LOT of stolen eggs or potatoes. It will have one U.A. device attached - a red and white streamer tied by Ray Gendreau who lived across from the mouth of the Snigdom Road, c. 1960. Try it in Musquash Stream sometime! Aye, Wayne
