As a matter of fact, it was the "long barrel" Remington Very-type that I had I mind when I asked. It was a "break-top" with spur trigger, shot (projected) a Very flare, and came out, as I recall, off-the-top, in the 1870s. (I've queried eBay listings as pyrotechnical, etc., and have yet to get past their gate on firearms with anything with the word "Gun" or "Pistol." I think the subject is verboten with them. I can see potential misuse now: "stick 'em up, or I'll flame you!")
