Walt,
My only comment would be that it is my opinion you are correct. Many moons ago when I was being taught to climb at the Signal Corps "Pole Yard", we had two kinds of climbers. The climbers with the very long gaffs(that's what we called them fifty years ago) were for tree climbing to get through the bark, and the short "gaffs" were for poles. This is circa 1951-52 Army Signal Corps. As a side note, I saw an experienced lineman that worked for Indiana Bell before his army stint come off a tree in the CP area after placing a line and put the gaff on his right foot through the top of his combat boot on his left foot square in the center, accidentally of course.
