Subject: RE: Gen. McClellan Notified re: Lee Entering MD

Message Detail:
Lt. B.N. Miner reported the presence of a large wagon train moving from Leesburg east to the area of Edward's Ferry.
Miner further reported the firing of musketry in the area and believed the Confederates were attempting to cross the
Potomac into Maryland. This occurred on September 4th.

Their station continued to operate for another two days. At that time, the area was to "hot" to continue signal opera-
tions. They signaled the presence of the enemy and skedaddled but, to late to avoid capture. Sugar Loaf was
again in the hands of the Confederates.

By the 9th, all indicators suggested a large Confederate force in the environs of Fredericksburg.

Chapter 9 of Edwin Fishel's book The Secret War for the Union, begins with Miner's contribution to the drama about
to unfold. Probably one of the best books on Civil War intelligence.
