Subject: RE: Signal flare as weapon?

Message Detail:
Welcome Paul,

I concur with Lou. The US army signal corps ordered both signal cartridges that also went by other names, such as composition fires and telegraphic night signals. Both the army and navy had their own signal pistol which, by today's standards would be classified as a holder. The 'guns' remained with the services but the cartridges went into civilian use especially for light-house and life-saving service and had a long wooden handle to hold the fusee instead of a brass or steel triggered-hammer firing percussion cap pistol.

You may wish to scroll down and use the Message Search feature for 'signal pistol' and 'Coston' at this forum. Happy hunting. It ought to be, shall we say... enlightening.
