Welcome to the forum Paul! Unfortunately, the signal pistol
in use during the American Civil War didn't actually fire
the flare up into the air. I don't think that innovation
was created until the late 1870's.

The pistol in use during the war held the flare while it
burned. This limited the range it could be seen under cer-
tain circumstances but, was useful enough that Myer, the
head of the Signal Corps, ordered one thousand of them
for field use.
