Subject: RE: On Re-creating at Historic Signal Sta Sites

Message Detail:
As I spell out in my recent book Spies, Scouts, and Secrets in the Gettysburg Campaign, one of the key factors leading to the loss of the battle at Gettysburg was the separation of Jeb Stuart and three cavalry brigades from the main army for a good portion of the battle. This separation came about because the Union signal station on Maryland Heights alerted Gen. Hooker at his HQ in Fairfax, VA that Hill and Longstreet's corps of Lee's army were crossing the Potomac. This msg I believe traveled from MH probably to Sugar Loaf Mtn. then relayed across the river to Guilford Hgihts, and then perhaps by telegraph from Leesburg down to Fairfax. When Hooker received that message, he started his army moving northward that blocked Stuart from taking a shortcut up into Maryland and Pennsylvania, and forced him to be delayed in arriving at Gettysburg.

Now the sending of that that critical message is a reenactment that I would love to see take place. Regards, Tom
