Although it seems Whipple himself would have preferred otherwise, there was a brief Whipple-aeronautics connection in the Arlington area when, as a Captain of Topographical Engineers, he was detailed to assist in the initial deployment (if it could be called that) of the “balloon corps” of the AoP in the summer of 1861. [See Haydon for multiple references.] The “other” Ft. Whipple is today the site of the VA hospital complex in Prescott, AZ.
