Subject: RE: Norris & Worden & The Battle of Hampton Roads

Belay that last xmsn! Scratch ref to Worden. Eliminate it. Don't go to sleep tonight with that thought in mind! (And where was mine, when I wrote that, "off the cuff"?)
Norris's bro-in-law was not John WORDEN of the Monitor, but future RADM Reed WERDEN (USS Minnesota - see the link appended below).
After graduating from Yale (Class of 1840), Norris went to New Orleans to practice law. When gold was discovered, he went to California, but instead of panning, accepted position of judge advocate, Pacific Sqdn. (Thomas ap Catesby Jones). He met, wooed and wed dau of former US consul to Chile, Ellen Hobson, and they were married in chapel in Valparaiso. Ellen's sister, Hepza, mar Werden. (Werden had sloop-of-war Vandalia, 1849-1852, in Pacific Sqdn.) It was WERDEN whom Norris refused to speak to after the balloon went up and they parted ways.
Remember, WERDEN, not Worden! Mea culpa. Tks for questioning.
