How much better to SEE Mr. Fearnley's painting than to imagine it from my word-picture! Tks for posting and for comments.

I'm hesitant to ascribe as much respect for military protocol being a factor at the time of the war -- at least for the early years. Both sides seem to have been unmoved by that consideration -- for example, Union shelling of the Court House signal in Vicksburg, which was being used by CS sigs, with sick and wounded in the same building.
