I was on a Joint Readiness Exercise at Eglin AFB, Florida in 1983 where a logistics Tactical Operations Center had a remote speaker unit connected to an AN/VRC-46 radio mounted in an M151A1 jeep parked 100 feet away. In the JRX the 7th Infantry Division were the Blue forces and the Red ones were a brigade of the 82nd Airborne plus attached armor. (The JRX morphed into being the invasion of Grenada; those of us at Eglin were the reinforcements had the Cubans gotten frisky. They didn't and we weren't.) The command net in the TOC was dead and I had to explain patiently to its commo Military Occupational Specialty E7/Sergeant First Class that the BA-30 batteries (common D-Cell flashlight batteries) in the remote speaker unit needed to be replaced ... that fixed the problem and presto the net came alive with traffic.
