Subject: RE: CSA Black Signal Flag

Message Detail:
If I understand correctly, the flag in question was actually ceremonial, presumably awarded to a Union signal officer, rather than an “operational” signal flag. (Although I did see a black one in one of the web illustrations copied from a manual.) Somewhere along the line it was captured by the Confederates, then re-taken in turn by the Union “detective”, ca. 1864?

(PS--Every time I see an example of this “off the top o’ yer noggin” knowledge, I wonder why there isn’t a narrative history/encyclopedia of the CW Signal Corps, N & S, authored by D. W. Gaddy!)
