Dave: Many thanks. The sources you provided should help. Gen. Holmes was criticized for losing Arkansas Post and 5000 soldiers. He apparently got word to Hindman in northwest Arkansas to march to relieve the Post, but due to bad weather, Gen. Hindman couldn't get there in time. The few form "No. 22 (Vouchers)" that I've seen show Holmes paying for telegraph service in the east and for courier service in Arkansas. This naturally raises the question: Just how quickly could Holmes be expected to respond to Union attacks in a region that had few railroads and fewer telegraph lines. Walt
