Well stated, Mark/John: "We'll show them how it's done and how the enemy is profitting from using 'em, and if they choose not to do so, it's their loss, and we'll demonstrate anyway." It was that way in the 1860s and it has been that way in the history of reenactment, that the senior officers -- perhaps well versed in Hardee and the combat arms, but largely ignorant of signals -- pushed away offerings of signal help and sneaked in modern gear to communicate (or call an ambulance). Then the early signal reenactors showed that the system developed in the late 1850s actually worked! And some (most?) changed their attitudes. Hang in there -- keep 'em waving.
