Subject: RE: building a signal tower

Message Detail:
Mike, At least one outfit that may still be reachable here (check the Search feature) teamed up with an Engineer re-enactment group that built a "Boy Scout"-type tower, braced and leaning against a stout tree. (As a kid, my Dad helped me to build a smaller one of pine saplings, perhaps 12-18' or so high, with platform and side railings at top, as well as a loftier tree perch with rope ladder, having wooden rungs.) The "pig-pen" construction is well known from the familar shots made at Sharpsburg-Antietam in Sep 1862. (Also check out the works on woodcraft and similar topics.)

You know, of course, that towers were not necessary, as along as there were natural or alternatives elevations available, and handier. (Needless to say, towers also raise concerns of liability in the case of accidents these days, so you'll have to ponder that aspect.)

Now I'll turn you over to the experts and see what they have to say.
