Subject: RE: Telegraph insecurity during CW

Message Detail:
Tom,
Dave Gaddy has some interesting comments about famous telegrapher assigned to General R.E.LEE and also one who was adept at "Tapping" Union telegraph lines, if my memory serves me correctly. If he copies the mail here, I'm sure he will respond with more detailed info concerning such events.

By the way, you mention City Point and Grant's HQ. The telegraph line that he used was approximately 397 miles long across VA and into Fort Monroe (two submarine cable runs included for about 20 miles) and then up to Wilmington, Baltimore and back into Washington, DC to the War Dept. USMT Telegraph Room next to "Old Mars" (Edwin M.Stanton's) office. Quite a technical feat (my opinion only) for Ca 1864-65 communications.
73 de Ray ..
